Transit insurance is not a magic promise that every possible loss will be paid. It is a documented risk arrangement. The strongest claim process starts before pickup with item declaration, photos, packing notes, value disclosure, and clear service terms.
The Short Answer
If a customer wants damage accountability, the move should have visible inventory, photos, declared high-value items, agreed packing grade, and service-wise claim rules. Claims become weak when goods were self-packed, value was hidden, damage was reported late, or the item had pre-existing condition issues.
What Declaration Means
Declaration means telling the mover what needs special attention before execution. Examples include glass cabinets, marble tops, TVs, monitors, art, antiques, musical instruments, imported appliances, expensive chairs, and high-value furniture.
Photos Matter
Take photos of fragile goods, electronics, appliances, furniture condition, vehicle condition, and packed cartons where relevant. Photos create a practical baseline for pickup and delivery discussions.
Items That Need Separate Handling
- Jewellery, cash, cards, and original documents
- Medicines, keys, laptops needed immediately, and personal devices
- Plants, pets, perishables, liquids, and hazardous goods
- High-value collectibles, art, antiques, or items with emotional value
- Vehicle accessories and loose goods inside a car or bike
These should either stay with the customer or be declared and handled under special terms.
Why Self-Packed Cartons Are Different
If a customer packs a carton and the mover cannot verify the contents or internal cushioning, damage accountability becomes harder. Mark self-packed cartons clearly and avoid putting fragile or high-value items inside them without disclosure.
What to Do at Delivery
Inspect visible cartons, appliances, furniture, and fragile goods before final closure. If something appears damaged, photograph the item, packing, carton label, and placement area. Share the booking reference and item detail quickly.
What a Claim File Should Include
- Booking or quote reference
- Item name and declared value where applicable
- Pickup and delivery photos
- Photos of packing and damage
- Delivery date and reporting time
- Any exception notes recorded with the crew or coordinator
