Packers and movers cost in India is not one number. It is the result of inventory, distance, packing material, building access, crew time, vehicle plan, route risk, insurance, and move timing. A quote is trustworthy only when those variables are visible.
The Short Answer
A household shifting quote should explain what is being moved, how it will be packed, who is responsible for execution, what access assumptions were used, and what payment is due before and after delivery. If a quote gives only a single low amount, it is not enough information for a serious booking decision.
1. Inventory Volume
BHK size is a shortcut, not the full truth. A compact 2 BHK can cost less than a heavily furnished 1 BHK if the second home has fewer appliances, fragile items, and bulky furniture. Wardrobes, beds, sofa sets, kitchen inventory, appliances, study tables, balcony goods, and storage lofts should be visible before quote lock.
2. Packing Grade
Packing can range from basic carton and tape work to stronger material planning for fragile items, glass, electronics, appliances, furniture edges, and intercity transit. A cheaper quote often reduces material or time, which can increase damage risk.
3. Distance and Route
Local moves are usually priced around crew time, vehicle slot, access, and city travel. Intercity moves add transport distance, tolls, transit window, route demand, documentation, and insurance decisions.
4. Floor, Lift, and Parking Access
Indian metro moves often become expensive because of access, not kilometers. Staircase-only buildings, small lifts, long carry from truck to lift, basement height restrictions, and no-parking lanes can change manpower and time.
5. Timing
Month-end, weekends, public holidays, night moves, and urgent bookings can cost more because crew and truck availability are tighter. If possible, book early and avoid peak apartment handover dates.
6. Insurance and Declaration
Transit insurance depends on declared value, item category, policy terms, and evidence. High-value goods should be declared before moving day. Undeclared value is a common cause of claim disputes.
7. What a Locked Quote Should Say
A locked quote should state service type, pickup and delivery addresses, inventory basis, packing grade, floor/lift/access assumptions, transport mode, insurance choice, inclusions, exclusions, advance, balance payment, and conditions for change.
Red Flags in a Moving Quote
- No written item list
- No inventory basis
- No access assumptions
- No packing material detail
- No insurance or claim explanation
- No named company accountability
- No clear payment release condition
Compare price only after the included work is comparable. Start with the Marshal calculator, then confirm the final goods list and building access before booking.
